Laura Heck
Laura is a Denver-based artist, creating sustainable abstract mixed media works on paper as well as pet portraits. She was born and raised in South Dakota, and moved to Minnesota to attend St. Cloud State University to pursue a degree in art education. After graduating, she taught high school art in South Dakota for four years.
Upon accepting a teaching job and moving to Colorado in 2016, Laura stumbled into commissioned pet portraits after sharing a portrait of her own pup, Kenzie. She has become fond of “meeting” pets and owners, and hearing heartwarming stories of adoption and connection. Balancing her love of creating cherished pet portraits, she is currently exploring and expanding on her series, The Palette Cleanse Paintings. This series was inspired by the time-and-material-consuming process of cleaning her palette and her time spent working at non-profit and creative reuse center, ReCreative Denver.
“The Palette Cleanse Paintings are created with swipes of leftover dried and watered down, acrylic paint from my glass paint palette. The application of upcycled paint on recycled fine art paper is completely unpredictable in color and texture. In contrast to the unpredictability of the paint colors and textures, each piece is completed with deliberate mark making, from a variety of 2D media.”
